Wild Women of a Certain Age - Magi Gibson
The Female Poet on Reaching Forty
She’s suddenly aware
of crow’s feet marching round her eyes
of orange peel upon her thighs
and silver strands
appearing in her hair.
She looks around
and is astounded
she is surrounded
by younger men.
And so she whispers to herself –
fuck forty then!
"Blessèd be Magi Gibson for the country hath need of such a voice – made in Scotland from girders."
– Cencrastus
It is a pleasure to read poems that evoke passion and excitement.
Magi Gibson’s title poem has become an anthem for
women everywhere – an underground classic pinned up on
notice boards. We had the poem, now we have the whole
book and it doesn’t disappoint. These poems spring from
taxis, supermarkets and long car drives through the wind
and rain. They spring from fantasies, daydreams, nightmares,
from love and hate, but, above all, they exalt and
enhance everyday life.
Magi Gibson was SAC Writing Fellow for
Aberdeenshire, involved in a project in Angus exploring
the teaching of environmental education through
expressive arts. Her poetry is widely published in literary magazines and anthologies with
worldwide distribution. She was the co-winner of the Scotland on Sunday/ Women 2000 writing prize
in 1990. She has published one full-length poetry collection, Kicking Back, (Taranis), which was
nominated for Saltire Best First Book Award.
Wild Women of a Certain Age proved so popular, touching a chord with readers of all ages
and sexes, that both the original and the 1st reprint sold out within a year!
